THE number of migrants intercepted crossing the English Channel in small boats in 2025 has reached 36,886, already exceeding 2024’s total of 36,816 and making it the second-highest year for small boat crossings yet, research by Migration Watch UK shows.
The worst year for small boat crossings so far was 2022, which saw 45,774 migrants detected while attempting to make the crossing. With more than two months left in the year, if the current rate of crossings continues Migration Watch expects the 2025 total to finish well above 40,000.
Since Sir Keir Starmer took office on July 5, 2024, the total number of small boat migrants intercepted crossing the Channel is 60,126 – nearly the population of Hereford (60,480 according to the 2021 census).
This means an average of 127 arrivals every single day of Sir Keir’s 474 days as Prime Minister.
Alp Mehmet, Chairman of Migration Watch, said: ‘Migration Watch has warned time and time again that without proper deterrence or effective action against those crossing the Channel illegally, numbers would go on rocketing. This is no way to control the border. Sir Keir Starmer and his Home Secretary must get with it and get a grip. The public have had enough of talk and gimmicks with no action.’
