A resolution that would amend the state constitution and restrict the General Assembly from allowing a statewide property tax in Tennessee was passed by the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee on Tuesday.
Senate Joint Resolution 1 (SJR0001), sponsored by Senator Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin-District 18), is “a resolution to propose an amendment to Article II, Section 28 to prohibit the general assembly from levying, authorizing, or otherwise permitting a state tax on property.”
With 9 votes in favor of the resolution, SJR0001 was recommended for passage by the Committee. Only Senator Jeff Yarbro (D-Nashville-District 21) voted against the resolution, while Senator London Lamar (D-Memphis-District 33) was present but not voting.

The resolution passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 25.
It will now be sent to the Senate Calendar Committee to be scheduled to be heard on the Senate floor.
The companion House Joint Resolution 2 (HJR0002) has not yet been placed on a committee calendar for consideration. That resolution is being sponsored by State Representative Tandy Darby (R-Greenfield-District 76).
