Rutherford County Schools recently experienced a cyberattack that compromised both student and employee information.

On December 27, Director James “Jimmy” Sullivan posted on the district website that hackers gained unauthorized access to “some student information” during a “network and systems disruption” on November 25.

According to Sullivan, the district has been working with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the extent of the breach.

Sullivan went on to explain that student information was not the only personal information accessed in the attack.

“The cybersecurity specialists have informed us that some employee personal information was subject to unauthorized acquisition,” he stated. “We do not believe it includes all of our employees, but we are conducting a thorough investigation. In addition, some student information was subject to unauthorized acquisition.”

Sullivan also confirmed that a comprehensive review of all potentially impacted data is underway.

“Once our review is complete, we will notify affected individuals in accordance with applicable laws,” he assured.

TBI spokesman Josh DeVine confirmed that Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is working with the school system in responding to the attack.
