Dear Editor
IT IS generally acknowledged that arriving unannounced and uninvited to our shores, with deliberately no ID, is a criminal offence. A line of police officers along the shore with handcuffs would rapidly change perceptions. Of course, the bleaters bleat disingenuously that we don’t have the prison spaces, but this doesn’t have to be so, given a simple but radical action as follows: offer all current convicts in prison for non-violent crimes the chance of immediate release, on two contractual conditions:
- that they are tagged for the remainder of their sentence;
- that they sign to say that if they re-offend, they’ll go back inside and begin their sentence all over again plus, of course, their new sentence consecutively;
Would this not be a better idea than the deranged one some little time ago about releasing violent criminals early?
