Dear Editor
The closest I ever got to our monarchy was when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip made a visit near to the school I attended. The teachers lined up us kids on the side of the road to wave as our Royals whizzed past. We were fortunate as Prince Philip had seen us, he obviously gave his missus a nudge, who in turn gave us a regal wave and a smile before leaving us in their wake and us kids talking, excitedly, about it for days after the event.
Sadly, Prince Andrew and his antics with Jeffrey Epstein have done a great deal of harm to our monarchy, which has given all the left-wing republicans a chance to creep out of their socialist hidey-holes and call for the abolition of our monarchy.
This is dangerous stuff as our monarchy is an integral part of our nation’s constitution. People often say we do not have a written constitution, but it is more complex than that, parts are written and parts laid down in layers of law and legal precedents going back over centuries. Our monarchs have overseen these developments have ensured Britain has developed into a stable democracy seeing us through wars and other turmoil over the centuries and decades – we lose our monarchy at our peril.
I wonder how much those republicans will like having a President Farage? Maybe they will decide the monarchy is not that bad after all!
