Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Can someone kindly explain the UK government’s policy on public building contracts? Perhaps a guide on NOT how to do it?

The Scottish prison overspend, HS2, hospital construction, etc etc. Are there any stable criteria for project management – or is it in the laps of our non-gods in the Civil Service?

I live in France where engineers are respected and rewarded. Look at their nuclear power construction programme, their autoroutes, their high-speed train network. Completed (not always on time or budget, I do admit) successfully and to the envy of much of the world.
