Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

THANK you for an excellent and poignant article.  Like you, I will not be watching our
hypocritical monarch and assorted politicians paying their faux respects to the Glorious Dead. I shall stand in silence for two minutes to remember those brave men and women who defended our freedom in the Second World War, and especially my mother’s first fiancé who was a wireless operator/air gunner in a Lancaster bomber of 49 Sqn based at RAF Fiskerton. I have the original photo of the crew; my mother’s fiancé is at the right on the bottom row. He and the rest of the crew of JB 701, EA G for George, were shot down coming back from a raid on Stuttgart on 29th July 1944. They are all buried in a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in St Martin-sur-Oreuse.
