According to recent reports, shootings in Chattanooga reached a record high for the month of November.

In total, the city had ten criminal shootings in November, the most out of any month this year.

Those shootings include a man firing shots at an apartment complex, multiple people being shot at a bar near McCallie Avenue, and an 18-year-old firing a gun at the Hamilton Place Mall and ultimately shooting himself in the foot during a fight in a Dick’s Sporting Goods Store and two other 18-year-old males exchanging gunfire in the drive through of a local Bojangles.

The Ashe Core Youth Empowerment Foundation, an organization that works to prepare local young people for the workforce and future leadership roles, is calling for more intervention and greater accountability for youth who are involved in criminal activity.

“I believe that they need to be prevented by giving the education and the mentorship beforehand, so that these types of things will be prevented from even happening,” said LeBron Clay, founder of the Foundation. “They do need more on hand community-based programs to teach them skills they can go on and use in life.”

He also says there is a need for parents to be more involved in monitoring their children’s online activity.

“You have to parent your child, meaning that you have to actually police their social media engagement,” Clay said.

In the last ten years, Chattanooga has seen two high-profile mass shootings.

On July 16, 2015, Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez was killed by police after he carried out a terrorist attack on two military facilities in the city, killing four Marines and one Navy sailor, and wounding two others.

On June 5, 2022, several shooters launched an attack at a nightclub in downtown Chattanooga. Three people died in that incident, and 14 others were injured.
