An elementary school teacher in Decatur County has been arrested and charged with rape of a child.
According to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, 47-year-old Allen Maxwell was arrested on Friday, January 9, at his home in Parsons. No additional details about the alleged incident have been made available at this time.
In the state of Tennessee, rape of a child is a sexual offense involving a child between the ages of 8 and 13.
Maxwell is a physical education teacher at Decaturville Elementary School, according to the school’s website. He also reportedly served as a football coach.
The Decatur County School System said it was notified of the investigation and immediately placed Maxwell on administrative leave.
In a statement, the district said Maxwell has also been banned from all Decatur County Schools campuses and from having any contact with students or staff.
“The district is cooperating fully with the Sheriff’s Office and is conducting its own review consistent with state law and district policy,” the statement read. “Our focus at this time is on the safety of our students, staff, and school community. Support will be available for any students or staff who may need assistance at this time.”
