Dear Editor
YOUR choice of Letter of the Day brought a smile. Over the years, Tory die-hards have posted in various social media on how Reform has no policies, is a flash in the pan, will get nowhere, will never get anyone on the green benches and so on. It’s admirable that people have such a strong sense of belonging and unwavering support. The old ‘team spirit’ is alive and well and anyone looking to change their allegiance is a rogue, a charlatan and not the sort of person to associate with.
Football fans will grumble as their club lies at the bottom of their group but remain stalwart supporters, waiting for their chance to rise to the top. It is truly admirable. The difference is, quite simply, that politics is no game. The serious side of politics is the nation’s fate.
History shows us our modern political landscape has been one of change. The Whigs morphed into the Liberal Party, the Tories into the Conservative and Unionist Party. The Liberals died and the Conservatives are in their death throes. Times change and with them, so do the needs of the country. Whilst unwavering support is admirable, it should be balanced against the good of the nation. Churchill himself crossed the floor twice! No one can say he did not do his bit for the nation.
Having fumbled our way through the 20th and first quarter of the 21st century, it’s easy to miss the salient changes that our nation has endured. However, a snapshot of 1950s Britain alongside Britain today shows a stark decline in social cohesion, work ethic, sense of duty and crime. This period deserves to be one of reflection. We are becoming all we fought against.
Our unwritten constitution provides for freedom of government, that no government shall bind any future government by its actions. Of course, the tacit agreement exists not to undo the work of the previous government so as to avoid a continual tit for tat undoing. Perhaps the time has come for a reset. Clearly, neither Labour nor the Conservatives have understood just where we are and what must happen to put us back to where we need to be.
Maybe, just maybe, Reform UK could do just that.
Kind regards,
Michael Cheyne
