Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Sir Keir Starmer reportedly claims that the Conservatives’ ‘botched’ Brexit deal has harmed the economy and that he wants to get closer to the bloc on defence, energy and trade.

Thus the PM deduces that because Brexit was ‘botched’ we need all but rejoin. Had paying to be in the single market increased our exports to the EU – hence UK jobs – then a benefit might have been argued and he might have had a case. But the fact is that before Brexit our exports to the EU had been trending downwards for years and that has only continued.

So what did the UK get in return for £18billion (£9billion net) from being in the single market, apart from stifling regulations?

The EU is a basket case and its rulers have total contempt for democracy. It remains in long-term decline, while 90 per cent of the world population is outside the EU and is growing both in numbers and buying power. We need to focus on where the growth is.
