AMA Now Says ‘Evidence Is Insufficient’ for Trans Surgeries – HotAir

As I wrote earlier today, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons broke ranks with the American medical establishment to oppose gender transition surgeries for minors, and even though it does not provide hormone therapies, it made clear that its objection to surgeries applied equally to other medical “gender-affirming care.”

An interesting thing happened in its wake: the American Medical Association, which has firmly backed the alphabet movement, is beginning to backtrack as well.

It’s amazing what losing a lawsuit will do, especially when that single lawsuit is obviously a canary in a coal mine filled with methane just waiting to explode.

Credit where credit is due: National Review is doing good work following this story, which is being largely ignored in the Pravda Media so far.

“When evidence regarding benefit is limited, natural history is uncertain, and fully informed consent a challenge, ASPS believes that plastic surgeons should adopt a posture of heightened caution, enhanced documentation, and explicit uncertainty disclosure, recognizing that their role is not simply technical but ethical,” the guidance adds. “Shared decision-making in this setting not only requires multidisciplinary input, but clear surgeon judgment regarding whether proceeding with irreversible surgery is consistent with the patient’s long-term welfare.”

ASPS is the first major medical association to clearly disavow gender-transition surgeries for minors. The organization represents more than 11,000 physicians and was founded in 1931.

Other medical associations like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Medical Association (AMA)  have remained in support of gender-related care for adolescents.

The APA said in December after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) moved to restrict medical centers from performing gender-related surgeries on children, that it was “committed to ensuring that all children — including gender-diverse youth and children covered by Medicaid — receive care that is backed by science, delivered with compassion, and offered without political interference.”

The AMA said in a statement to National Review that because “the evidence for gender-affirming surgical intervention in minors is insufficient for us to make a definitive statement . . . the AMA agrees with ASPS that surgical interventions in minors should be generally deferred to adulthood.”

The AMA supports “evidence-based treatment,” including other types of gender-affirming care for minors, the organization added.

Gee, the AMA up to now has been almost hysterical in its support for gender-affirming care, but is beginning to backtrack.

The modified limited hangout is already that new research, such as the Cass Report, are demonstrating that there is insufficient evidence to back medical treatment for what is obviously a psychological problem, but that is just crap, and obviously so.

It is logically impossible to maintain that a treatment is proven “gold standard care,” as has been maintained up until yesterday, and then reverse course upon the sudden discovery that there isn’t any such evidence at all. They aren’t claiming, at least so far, that the evidence shows that their previous evidence is wrong; they are admitting that they never had the “evidence” in the first place.

2019: “ASPS firmly believes that plastic surgery services can help gender dysphoria patients align their bodies with whom they know themselves to be and improve their overall mental health and well-being.”

2024: “ASPS currently understands that there is considerable uncertainty as to the long-term efficacy for the use of chest and genital surgical interventions for the treatment of adolescents with gender dysphoria, and the existing evidence base is viewed as low quality/low certainty. This patient population requires specific considerations.”

2025: “[T]here is insufficient evidence demonstrating a favorable risk-benefit ratio for the pathway of gender-related endocrine and surgical interventions in children and adolescents.”

First, the evidence was strong enough to “firmly believe” that the surgeries were necessary, then it was low quality, and now there is none at all.

If there was no evidence, explain why all these institutions loudly proclaimed there was. Doesn’t science begin in ignorance and END in confidence, not the other way around?

Endocrinologists and psychologists are still insisting that surgery and hormones are “life-saving care.” Will they soon make this strategic retreat?

Let us hope so.

Reversing course does not exonerate any of these guys, of course. They should be sued into oblivion at the very least, and many should go to jail for the rest of their lives, along with being used for the sort of medical experiments they imposed on children.

But reversing course will at least stop the madness.

Unfortunately, few of the politicians who have jumped on board, up to and including kidnapping children from parents to impose damaging medical treatments on vulnerable children, will pay no price at all. They won’t get sued. They, for the most part, won’t even lose elections. Scott Weiner will win his seat in Congress, Peggy Flanagan will be a hero to the left and a candidate for higher office, and Gavin Newsom will still have a great shot at becoming the Democratic nominee for president.

Just as Zohran Mamdani can impose policies that leave dead homeless people on the streets of New York City and remain popular, all these politicians will just ride the next wave of insanity like a surfer enjoying a fine time as a killer wave crashes ashore.

Rest assured, the alphabet movement is crashing, but it will persist in the deep Blue pockets for a long time to come. Millions have been brainwashed, and mere evidence will have no effect on them. Most normal people have already rejected the idiocy, but like the remnants of the Communist movement, the rest will lie in wait to do yet more damage as the opportunity presents itself.
