Dear Bruce Newsome,
I am writing in response to your article in yesterday’s TCW, ‘Tommy Robinson and the other persecuted souls who could seek refuge in America’.
I have been engaged in correspondence with the White House, Mr Garson, and the US State Department regarding this issue, providing first-hand insight into how previous attacks and ongoing hostility have reshaped our daily lives and limited our ability to live openly as Jewish British citizens in the United Kingdom.
I wanted to thank you for raising an issue that many feel is either misunderstood or too quickly dismissed in mainstream discussion. For an increasing number of British Jewish citizens, concerns about safety and belonging are not theoretical – they are realities that affect daily life.
You pose an important question about refuge. If the UK Government is confident that Jewish citizens feel secure and fully protected, in theory it would have little concern about alternative asylum proposals being offered abroad, on the basis that very few would choose to leave.
Increased funding for synagogues and institutions does not translate into personal safety in everyday life. Experiences of hostility, intimidation, and social exclusion – and the strain of being constantly on edge for fear of attack or being ostracised – take a cumulative toll.
Ultimately, lived experience cannot be legislated away or redefined by public reassurance alone. Safety cannot simply be declared: it must be felt.
Due to the sensitivity of this matter, I am not able to publicly identify myself, but I felt it important to contribute a personal perspective.
Thank you for your time and for bringing attention to a complex and difficult subject.
A British-born citizen
