A bill that designates January 22nd every year as “Sanctity of Life Day” in Tennessee has passed the House and heads next to the Senate.

Sponsored by Representative Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood-District 61), House Bill 1784 passed in a 69 to 22 vote along party lines.

January 22nd is the date in 1973 that the United States Supreme court issued its ruling in Roe v. Wade. On January 13th, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5147 recognizing that the lives of 15 million unborn children had been lost due to legalized abortion and designating January 22nd as National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

When the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022, a trigger law passed by the Tennessee General Assembly went into effect that outlawed abortion within the state.

The bill’s text states that “Tennessee remains committed to the values and freedoms enshrined in our nation’s founding document, including the unalienable right to life” and seeks to amend state code to observe “Sanctity of Life Day” annually on January 22nd “so that Tennesseans may renew its commitment each year to protect the sanctity of life, and to honor the lives of those unborn children lost to legalized abortion.

The companion Senate Bill (SB1940), sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28) heads to the full Senate for a vote on Thursday, April 9th, 2026.
