Tennessee Conservative News Staff –

A Blount County commissioner has been charged with driving under the influence and possession of a handgun after allegedly crashing into someone’s backyard.

Officers from the Maryville Police Department responded to reports of the crash that occurred on the 300 block of South Fourth Street shortly after midnight on April 4.

When officers arrived on scene, they found that Earl McMahan Jr. had crashed through someone’s fence and then landed in a ditch about 40 or 50 yards away.

McMahan was removed from his vehicle, and officers noted that he appeared to have some minor injuries. As he was being taken to an ambulance on scene, police officers noted that he was “extremely unsteady on his feet” and had a “strong odor of alcohol” on him

According to the affidavit, McMahan “would randomly become distracted and grab onto objects for balance.” Officers also reported that he “ripped up a damaged fence post from his accident.”

Officers did not perform a field sobriety test because McMahan was so unsteady on his feet.

When officers searched his vehicle, they also found a loaded firearm.

McMahan is now facing charges of DUI and possession of a handgun while under the influence.

He is currently serving on the Blount County Commission, representing district 1. He is not seeking reelection.

McMahan is on the Beer Board, the Commission Workshop Committee, and the Education Committee.
