Washington Post Asks the Dumbest Question Ever – HotAir

Eric Swalwell, who is indisputably not particularly bright or charismatic, enjoyed a meteoric rise among the Democrats despite the fact that everybody knew he was a sexual predator.

After he was caught having an illicit affair with a Chinese spy, he was appointed to the House Intelligence Committee and became one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent spokesmen. The Democrats relied on him and Adam Schiff to be point men on smearing Donald Trump, and Swalwell was regularly trotted out to defend “women” against evil Republicans.

The Washington Post asks, how did that happen?

What a moronic question. Every single person in the world knows how and why that happened: the Democrats don’t care about women; they care about power, and Swalwell was a key “designated liar” used to spread The Narrative™.

When Cheyenne Hunt first arrived on Capitol Hill as a staffer in 2020, several other young women working there warned her privately: Stay away from Rep. Eric Swalwell.

Swalwell could be “creepy,” Hunt said other women told her, especially over social media.

Six years later, Hunt is one of several women who have leveraged their large followings online to go after Swalwell, enlisting women to come forward with their stories and connecting them with reporters at CNN and other outlets. Late last week, allegations that include sexual assault of a former staffer and sending unsolicited explicit messages to young women came to light in investigations published by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle. On Tuesday, a woman accused Swalwell of raping her in 2018.

As Democrats decided to take Swalwell out to clear the path for Tom Steyer, the radical billionaire, to become the frontrunner in the race for California governor, one theme kept coming up: everybody knew. The media knew. The staffers knew. His colleagues knew. They had video of Swalwell with hookers.

To call it an open secret downplays the reality; it was only secret from the voters. Everybody in politics knew, including all the people who endorsed him.

The stunning fall has Hunt and others asking how someone who was dogged by persistent rumors of inappropriate behavior toward women similar to what she heard in 2020 could have risen so high and so fast in a party that says it supports women’s rights.

“We do need to take a look inward as a party because it was an open secret,” said Hunt, the executive director of the youth group Gen Z for Change, referring to the Democratic Party. “Not necessarily that he was assaulting people but that he was a creep. That was well known.”

Swalwell’s career took off like a meteor at the same time women allege he was harassing them. His political trajectory — described here with the help of interviews with more than a dozen former staffers and political operatives, some of whom who spoke on the condition of anonymity to recount private discussions — suggests a Democratic Party enamored with a young congressman’s talent for sound bites and landing blows against President Donald Trump.

The most compelling fact that Democrats rely on to trash Donald Trump is that many, if not all, people think that he is crass. Most of the accusations made against Trump—even and especially the hoaxes aimed at smearing him—gain traction because a significant fraction of people think that his personal behavior is sketchy. He surrounds himself with attractive women, has an eye for the ladies, and seems lowbrow to a lot of people.

For people of a certain class, that is everything. So if you are going to trot out somebody to make outrageous accusations, at a minimum, they can’t be rapists. That is a bad look. Even for Democrats.

n 2015, Swalwell got a much-sought-after seat on the House Intelligence Committee. And in 2016, after Trump won the presidential election, Swalwell stepped into a role that would lead to continual cable news hits and more fundraising dollars: Trump antagonist.

“He became one of the Democrats’ favorite talking heads,” said one of Swalwell’s former staffers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss their former boss candidly. “And he was in green rooms and hobnobbing with famous people.”

Swalwell dived headfirst into the Russia investigation, pushing for an independent commission to investigate alleged attempts to influence the 2016 election.

His fame grew to the point that Swalwell decided to run for president alongside more than a dozen other Democrats seeking the 2020 nomination.

In 2021, Pelosi tapped Swalwell as an impeachment manager to help prosecute the House’s case against Trump, cementing his status as a sought-after cable news guest and hero to liberals who hoped Trump would be convicted.

Everybody in Washington knew that Swalwell was a scumbag, but Swalwell was a useful scumbag. Compared to the suffering of a few women—even women who work for these Democrats—his usefulness to the cause was much more important.

If the Democrats’ brand was not built entirely on the claim that they are the moral paragons and that Republicans want to oppress women, perhaps this mercenary behavior wouldn’t stand out so much. But so much of their political viability is bound up in their claim to be defenders of the weak; the reality stands out like a beacon against the moral darkness that is Washington.

Think about the Democrats’ favorite smear tactic, deployed when they have nothing else: accusations of sexual harassment, or even rape. The E. Jean Carroll case, or the Brett Kavanaugh smears.

“Believe all women!”

Obviously, the Democrats had to cover for Swalwell until some even more important imperative arose, such as the potential of losing the California governor’s race.

You don’t have to wonder why Democrats embraced Swalwell despite knowing all about his abuse of women. They embraced Bill Clinton, after all. They embraced Joe Biden without a second thought.

It’s simple: the moral posturing is all a show, and the media is willing to go along until they get their marching orders to destroy a Democrat for the benefit of the Party.

If, by now, you still believe that Democrats care about women as anything other than useful, exploitable voters, you are lost.
