Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

As a British immigrant to Australia, it enrages me when I see Australian war memorials despoiled, and that neither the RSL (Returned and Services League) nor the government speak out. Culprits are almost inevitably part of the Free Palestine faction and, unlike many educated Australians, would not be aware that several thousand young ANZAC volunteer soldiers in the First World War died fighting with the Allied Army that freed that part of the Middle East from 500-plus years of Turkish colonial rule. If these young men, whose sacrifice is recorded on so many of the memorials, had not pushed the Turks out, people born in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine and Israel would still be carrying Turkish passports. That is what the government and the RSL should have been saying.
