Dear Editor
RICHARD Tice (Daily Telegraph, May 6) is right to propose the ending of green levies, starting with those for offshore wind.
Such levies have cost over £200billion this century. There is no sign of significant improvement in wind farm performance. Indeed their projected capacity factors were significantly down-rated last year.
We should instead use the money to replace aging grid assets, including gas turbine generators. Because the 15GW of gas turbines planned for the early 2030s will be nowhere near enough to carry a grid maximum demand of 80GW when there is little sun or wind.
That assumes that we don’t want power cuts, during the one to two week periods in the year when wind and solar power are negligible.
