Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

TCW commendably drew attention to a video from Gavin Ashenden on the developing threat of a so-called Islamic blasphemy law proposed by the Government and its clear challenges to Christianity and to our freedoms. It cannot be recommended too strongly.

Such a law would be arbitrary, imposed by government diktat, and would be without reference to the unique status of Christianity in Britain.

Such a law would formally set Islam above all other faiths as the one protected religion because any legitimate discussion and the norms of open debate and criticism of its teachings could be construed either as being a ‘hate crime’ or blasphemy.

It represents clearly an example of unsolicited discrimination. More directly it would be a challenge to the claims of Christ himself.

Such a move by an atheistic secular government would be unprecedented in Britain.  It would spell the re-emergence of a Soviet/Stalinist-style totalitarianism with the inevitable return of religious persecution, with further suppression of our historic rights of freedom of speech and threats of continued imprisonment for dissenters. It would also further risk accelerating more division in our country.

Where is the democratic mandate for this proposed draconian law?

Such is its importance on so many fronts that nothing less than a national referendum should determine proposed changes of this magnitude.

Once again let the people decide.
