The Tennessee Conservative [By David Seal] –

In what many news sources are calling a “botched execution” of Tony Carruthers, activists are speaking in opposition of the death penalty and discussing the growing number of exonerations of death row inmates.

In April, a media conference was called in Nashville by the U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty to bring awareness to the issue of executing wrongly convicted persons.

Featured in that conference was Ray Krone who became the 100th death row inmate in 2002 to be exonerated and released from prison. An organization co-founded by Krone is linked HERE for background.

Fast forward to May 21, 2026, when the state of Tennessee attempted to execute Tony Carruthers. The media conference featured Carruthers’ case and called on Governor Lee to issue a stay of execution so that his case could be reviewed. Lee declined and the state moved forward with the execution of Tony Carruthers by lethal injection.

In reference to the failed attempt to execute Carruthers, several noted activists weighed in on the issue.

“Today’s botched execution attempt of Tony Carruthers is horrifying but not surprising. TADP has sounded the alarm for years about the serious problems with lethal injection and urged our state toward greater transparency so these problems can be addressed.” – said Stacy Rector, Executive Director, Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty

Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (TADP) works to honor life by abolishing the death penalty, preventing violence, and supporting those who experience harm. We seek to achieve this goal through educating and organizing citizens to act for change in our state.

“Tennessee has effectively made the case against the death penalty. They forced Tony Carruthers to represent himself at his own capital trial, failed to test DNA and fingerprint evidence and now they have failed to execute him. It is time to end the death penalty.” – said Laura Porter, Executive Director, U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty

The U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty is leading a coalition of 50+ organizations in a coordinated strategy to end the use of capital punishment once and for all. Members of the coalition are engaged in public education, advocacy, organizing, communications, litigation, and research at the state and national level.

The Tennessee Conservative News (TCN) Conducted an exclusive interview with Jon Crane, Media Director, U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty. Here is the dialogue from that interview.

TCN: Mr. Crane, could you please comment on the process of the attempted execution.

Crane: “According to Mr. Carruthers’ attorneys, executioners attempted to insert an IV line into his veins for about an hour and 20 minutes. They tried his arms, shoulders, foot, jugular and chest. When they attempted to insert a central line, his attorney reported that Mr. Carruthers was in a lot of pain as they continued to “stab” him two or three times to try to establish the line. The TDOC determined that they could not successfully access a line and then later, the Governor issued a one-year reprieve.”

TCN: Can you provide information on Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol?

Crane: “Since its introduction in 2025, attorneys and advocates have raised alarms about Tennessee’s new lethal injection protocol, which a court has not yet reviewed. Other problematic executions have occurred with this protocol, including the execution of Byron Black in August 2025. The State has continued to refuse to turn over public documents to attorneys regarding the drug they are using including whether it is expired.”

TCN: Has your organization been in contact with the governor’s office concerning Carruthers’ execution?

Crane: “Advocates created a petition asking Governor Lee to stop the execution and to grant DNA and fingerprint evidence testing. The petition garnered at least 115,000 signatures and presented those signatures to Governor Lee on Monday. On Tuesday morning, Governor Lee issued a statement that he would not intervene in the case, and the courts also refused intervention.”

TCN: Could you provide our readers with any facts that may be relevant to a review of Carruthers’ case and why it should be considered?

Crane: “Thirty years ago, Tony Carruthers was convicted and sentenced to death for the murders of Frederick Tucker, Marcellos Anderson, and Delois Anderson in Memphis without physical evidence. His conviction relied on testimony from informants, including one paid by the state who later recanted his statement. For decades, the state denied paying this informant and actively prevented the jury from knowing the full truth. Mr. Carruthers was forced to represent himself in court despite extreme mental illness.  Several fingerprints and DNA from the scene do not match Mr. Carruthers, but they were never compared to a suspect identified by his co-defendant. If Tennessee executes Mr. Carruthers, he will be the first person in nearly a century to be executed after being forced to represent himself at trial.”

–Conclusion of Interview–

Governor Bill Lee issued the following statement on his webpage at 1: 12 PM, May 21, 2026, after the attempted execution.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Governor Bill Lee released the following statement today:

“I am granting Tony Von Carruthers a temporary reprieve from execution for one year.”

Additional details from the Tennessee Department of Correction are below.

Statement from Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC):

Medical personnel quickly established a primary IV line; however, the team was unable to immediately establish a backup line pursuant to the lethal injection execution protocol.

The team continued to follow the protocol, but could not find another suitable vein. The team attempted to insert a central line pursuant to the protocol, but the procedure was unsuccessful. The execution was then called off.
