One of the most bizarre trends over the past 60 years or so is the sudden reversal of attitudes among Westerners on the issue of crime.
I’m no social historian, so I can’t pinpoint the exact time this reversal happened, and recognize that there is a substantial fraction of people who are as perplexed by this trend as I am, but as a society writ large, we went from “lock ’em up and throw away the key” to “that poor guy, he had a hard life and deserves a break.”

Guy gets *probation* a couple of years ago for hog-tying a woman, duct taping her and suffocating her with a plastic bag over her head, and earlier this week carjacks another woman and shoots her in broad daylight. It used to be uncontroversial to believe that the law-abiding had a right to be protected from criminals and that criminals needed to be punished. Putting them in jail served a double purpose: removing the criminals from society, rendering them harmless to the public when they were incarcerated, and imposing high costs on behavior that harms others and society.

It also used to be uncontroversial to assume that a criminal who attacks a person deserves whatever he gets, including a bullet in the front or back. Break into a house, and your life is forfeit. It only makes sense because, as John Locke, whose ideas dominate the US Constitution, argued, the criminal assaulting you has declared a state of war between you and him.
Now, in many states, you have a duty to retreat, and criminals in many places can nearly kill somebody and get probation, and even the most modest sob story can get a judge or liberal prosecutor crying for your troubles.

It often seems that liberals actively want criminals to roam the streets, and perhaps they do. Leftists, who love anarcho-tyranny certainly do, but most liberals seem more driven by sympathy or empathy for predators than actual malice toward society.

The Al-Qaeda terrorist and suspected mastermind of the 7/7 bombing in London 2005 in which 52 people were killed and 800 wounded, Haroon Aswat, was released early from psychiatric prison last year “after his schizophrenia improved.”
UK judges ruled for his release from psychiatric care, overriding police and security services’ warnings that he was still a massive danger to public security.
Aswat was linked via phone contacts with the bombers, had met some of them in Pakistan before the attack and had travelled back to the UK just weeks before the attacks and last the UK on the same morning that the attacks took place.
He was arrested in Zambia a few weeks later with bomb-making manuals.
The U.S. wanted him extradited for past terrorist offences on their territory but faced legal obstacles from European judges.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) first blocked his extradition to the USA due to concerns his paranoid schizophrenia would worsen in US prison conditions (breaching human rights against inhuman treatment). After US assurances on care, he was eventually extradited back in 2013.
He was sentenced in the USA in October 2015 to 20 years for conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaeda, including helping set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon with Abu Hamza associates.
After serving time, he was extradited back to the UK around 2022 and held under the Mental Health Act.
Last year, UK judges decided to give him an early release and he is now free in West Yorkshire with just limited monitoring since it was deemed that stricter measures such as being forced to wear an ankle monitor risked worsening his psychiatric status and would be against mental health law provisions.
I understand wanting to treat the mental illness of a man who will never be executed, just as I understand wanting to treat a prisoner with a disease; we are not barbarians. But when a terrorist kills 52 people, he is objectively dangerous and must be separated from society for life, whatever the excuse.

Liberals don’t think like that at all. Civilization is not something to be protected and cherished as a fragile thing, but rather it is a bottomless well of goodwill and resources that must embrace the criminals as wayward children and the most privileged among us.

This doesn’t just undermine social trust and order; it will cause civilization’s erosion into barbarism. And not just barbarism coming from the criminals. I’ve always supported a judge’s right to impose whatever sentence he believes just, because not every circumstance around similar crimes is the same. It’s true that some criminals are worse than others. But we cannot trust judges to exercise good judgment anymore.

In January, Jahmare Brown got on top of and beat a female attorney as she stepped off a MARTA train to go to work in Atlanta… he broke her NOSE and then shattered her ORBITAL BONE.
She needed 25 STITCHES.
…MARTA Police charged it as a MISDEMEANOR!!!
The incident report DIDN’T EVEN MENTION THE BROKEN BONES.
Brown was sentenced to 120 days… but he was released early, and only served 60.
He was out in March.
Two months later, he beat a postal worker with a ROCK and st*bbed Alyssa Paige to de*th at noon on the Atlanta Beltline.
If Brown had served the full 120 days the court gave him, he would have STILL BEEN IN JAIL the day he k*lled her.
Alyssa Paige would be alive.
STOP. LETTING. VIOLENT. OFFENDERS. OUT. OF. PRISON!!!!!!!!!!
It is getting to the point where we not only can’t live with the criminals among us, but with the liberals who let them roam among us. Their attitudes are incompatible with maintaining a healthy civilization.
