Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

The suppression or removal of our historic rights to free speech in Britain by government fiat is totally unacceptable and must be reversed and restored, for free speech is the basis of all other freedoms.

Our Common Law in theory protects that right but it is rejected or ignored by a succession of British parliaments so that unlawful penalties, the criminalisation of legitimate views by dissenters and equally unlawful imprisonments are the order of the day. That is tyranny.
The way forward therefore is to create a new and simple protection for this right similar to that of the First Amendment of the US Constitution, but within a British context and to incorporate it into law as a matter of urgency.

The form of words suggested can be as follows:

‘No British parliament, or any other legislative body outside the nations of Britain shall make any law respecting the suppressing or removal of our historic right to free speech and the exercise thereof, or that of freedom of expression through any medium: oral, electronic, or published.

‘These freedoms, including freedom of conscience, are inalienable rights outside the jurisdiction of our British parliament or devolved assemblies or by any international legislative organisation.’

If passed into law and our Constitution it would provide the necessary safeguards as follows:

1. Automatically abolish all so called ‘hate speech’ legislation.

2. Prevent the introduction of an ‘Islamophobic’ blasphemy law.

3. Re-establish freedom of expression right across the spectrum of all media platforms, including Facebook and X.

4. Remove entirely all government, legal, and jurisdictional control over free speech.

5. Legally bind all future governments into a new constitutional and permanent framework.

6. Provide a mandatory obligation for all chief constables and national police forces to observe and apply at all times without reservation.

These six points and accompanying proposal are at present tentative and subject to criticism, discussion, evaluation or amendments by interested parties, and the intention is to secure the endorsement of all political parties and selected media outlets in the near future.

Of course, it is recognised that these will be ignored or rejected by the Government and other leftist political parties, but it will give the opportunity for others to endorse and include them in their own policy statements so that the British public know where they stand.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Graham Wood
