Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

IN these times of uncertainty and chaos, we should congratulate the Scotland football team on its adherence to tradition.

The team’s World Cup performances have had all of our old favourites: the misplaced optimism; the defensive comedy; the desperate attempts to chase the game; the inevitable capitulation in the face of international standards of talent and competence.

Just as in 78 and 82 and any other time you like to think of, their dedicated fans, in their charming paramilitary uniforms, have never ceased to rally to the cause in the face of hopeless failure.

They have the consolation of beating Haiti.

Nationalist Scotland fans may cheer themselves with the thought that at least their football team does not show signs of obvious corruption.

And their nation on the road to independence still remains slightly wealthier and marginally better governed than Haiti.
