This is the second of two articles by David Wright offering a glimpse of life in Britain 20 years hence. The first can be read here.
THIS month it was reported by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine that 300 people a week die in hospitals awaiting admission. This was, of course, not reported in the mainstream media. That figure has now more than doubled to more than 600. The problem is entirely due to Britain’s woefully low ratio of hospital beds per 1,000 of the population. In 2022 this was 1.9; Japan had 13, Germany 8 and France 6. This is because, in spite of extra billions being hosed at the NHS every year, mostly going on additional layers of bureaucracy, no new hospital has been built in the last 40 years. The 1.9 figure is now likely to be even lower with the large population increase due to illegal and legal immigration.
If two parents allowed their child to starve to death they would be charged with murder, or at the very least manslaughter. Yet we effectively have a government body, the NHS, allowing hundreds of people to die from neglect every year; a clear case of corporate manslaughter on a grand scale.
In January 2044 Britain and Ireland were hit with a major snow event. This was similar to those of 1947 and 1963, both of which recorded 16-18ins of snow. Tens of thousands of people, mostly the elderly and those living alone, died of the cold, frozen to death in their homes. The BBC and mainstream media hardly mentioned this tragedy, yet invariably trumpet deaths in summer ‘caused’ by so-called heatwaves of a couple of days of temperatures of 38°C. The deaths in the 2046 cold spell were caused by a triple whammy: people could not afford to run their heat pumps, heat pumps are virtually ineffective below 6°C and there wasn’t any electricity anyway. The days were sunny but solar power was zero because, of course, all solar panels were blanketed with snow. Wind power was also zero because after six windless days all turbine blades were covered in snow and ice and could not be restarted until the thaw (thought of this, Mr Miliband?) Additionally many blades that stopped in a horizontal position broke off under the weight of snow and ice.
The motorway speed limit has been reduced to 50mph, ostensibly to reduce fuel consumption and save the planet. All other roads have been reduced to 20mph, but this is largely irrelevant because large potholes are so widespread that it is impossible to drive any faster. The holes can no longer be repaired because asphalt is derived from oil, which we do not produce and could not refine anyway because we have no refineries. Driving, which used to be a pleasure and even fun in many sports cars, is now a miserable experience made more so by almost non-existent free parking areas and astronomical parking fees.
Hosepipe bans are automatically introduced throughout the country on April 1 every year and strict water rationing is applied every June 1. This is because population increase resulting from immigration has greatly increased demand and none of the private monopoly water companies has built a reservoir in the last 54 years since 1992. A related issue has been the problem of raw sewage frequently overflowing out of manhole covers on many streets during heavy rain. These subside after an hour or two but the sewage remaining on roads and pavements still has to be dealt with: firefighters hose it into the nearest drains.
These problems can be blamed on successive governments, none of which has ever stood up to big businesses and told them, by legislation if necessary, to get their act together including investing in their capital assets.
The multiple recycling bins mandated in most cities have been quietly phased out after a second pedestrian was killed by an e-bike rider on the pavement while walking around a long line of bins. All household waste now goes to landfill.
After horse racing was banned in 2031, local authorities encouraged developers to build social housing on the courses. All were allocated to illegal immigrants. Councils decided that, to avoid ethnic disturbances, each site would be dedicated to one nationality. Thus Aintree was for Syrians, Epsom for Afghans, etc. In these areas crimes and disputes are settled by Sharia courts, female genital mutilation is widespread and girls of 13 are forced to marry 45-year-old men. The police, of course, don’t dare go anywhere near them.
