Well, the instapolls came in and the verdict was so in favor of Trump that a huge chunk of Harris voters had to admit the speech was pretty great.
Really, really reat, actually. The poll numbers are better than I can remember for any president’s speech to a joint session of Congress.
The Brad Parscale axiom was that when you’re explaining you’re losing, but when Trump is entertaining, he’s winning—74% of speech watchers, per CBS/YouGov, called the speech exactly that. pic.twitter.com/7AtzALWLlM

It’s hard to say how much the reaction is skewed by the fact that when Republicans are in office they are more likely to watch, and vice-versa. But the speech was objectively superb, the emotional moments were all highs and no lows, and the only people who could have been actually replelled by anything would be people with hard-core Trump-Derangement Syndrome.

One reason the speech served Trump well was his focus on 80-20 issues such as border security and protecting women and children. When he spoke of more controversial issues, he was relentlessly upbeat.
He did take a lot of digs at the Democrats, but did so by proxy almost every time by focusing his criticism on Biden. The only direct dig at the collected Democrats in front of him was perfect, because they proved him right throughout the speech.
He said the obvious: Democrats hate Trump more than they love their country or even ordinary people whose heroism should inspire us all. A young man with brain cancer. An aspirant to West Point getting accepted. A terrorist brought to justice. Peace talks for Ukraine. A heroic border patrol agent. An innocent man brought home from prison in Russia. The family of Corey Comperatore.
The Democrats couldn’t clap for any of them.

Trump’s dig at the Democrats might have backfired if they didn’t prove him to be right at every turn. They acted like petulant children, and even their normal allies saw it and called them out. It was stupid optics and stupid politics. One of the key lessons everybody should learn is that you should pick your battles. The Democrats picked one all right, but the one they were destined to lose.

The MSNBC crowd found darkness in every thing Trump said, but that is only because their souls are so black and filled with hatred for Trump, hatred for MAGA, hatred for things like freedom and open borders, that what they saw was a genuine existential threat to their most cherished hopes.
Nicole Wallace, seeing DJ getting his dreams fulfilled by the President of the United States in the House Chamber in the United States Capitol in front of Congress and the world speaks of him committing suicide.
This is genuinely the most repulsive comment I’ve heard in a very long time from anyone on television.

How deranged with hatred would you have to be in order to come up with that spin? Or Rachel Maddows?

The Left fears Americans loving America again, and Trump sure looks like he will make that happen. The Left is defined by its hatred for all things American. They speak of structural racism, “decolonization,” the inherent evils of capitalism, and the dark danger of MAGA. As Trump calls us to hope, they need us to hate.

Democrats could have risen to the moment, but as usual the only room they could read was one filled with people driven by hatred of the hoi polloi and their tribune. Americans at home cheered on the president, while the Democrats heckled him, his guests, and stormed out of the room.
Most viewers who tuned in say Trump’s speech made them feel “hopeful” and “proud.”

Presidential. Inspiring, Unifying. The left hated every moment.

If this speech was unifying, as it was, then the people who protest it are the ones on the outs. As America comes together, at least for one night, the Democrats made sure to let us know that they find us all repulsive.

The irony is that Hakeem Jeffries had to work very hard to keep the Democrats’ negative reactions as muted as they were. Many in his caucus had been agitating to go all Al Green on Trump and disrupt the speech. He convinced most of them to be less disruptive and keep their objections down to holding stupid little signs and to sit on their hands.
So at least the Democrats have that going for them. It could have been much, much worse for them.

A few non-deranged Democrats like Dan Turrentine saw how petty and hateful the Democrats were, but people like him are now on the fringes of the Democratic Party. Hatred is what defines the Democrats now.
I love my Party, but tonight was a new low. I get silence on this or that policy, and the raw politics of the base’s anger. But, for not a single D to stand to applaud a boy’s brave battle with cancer, or a man’s admission to West Point, was a classless disgrace.

He, too, dislikes Trump and would have loved to have his compatriots exploit political weaknesses, but they chose hate even over political advantage.

But, for not a single D to stand to applaud a boy’s brave battle with cancer, or a man’s admission to West Point, was a classless disgrace. And maddeningly, while overall Trump’s speech was politically good, there were political holes that could be exploited, juvenile taunts that voters hate, and comical lies. But much of that will be buried by our self-inflicted stupidity.
As the rest of America senses that the country is hurt but healing, Democrats want to pick at the wounds and up the pain for everybody.
I doubt that voters will enjoy that.
