Despite an overall decrease in theft from vehicles in Nashville over the past year, residents in some parts of the city are still dealing with repeated occurrences of car break-ins.

Last week, around 70 cars were broken into in Nashville, specifically in the Belmont, Hillsboro and Bellevue areas.

Metro Nashville Police say no weapons were stolen during the most recent string of break-ins, although that has appeared to be a primary motive for past thefts. Recent data shows that more than 1200 guns were stolen from vehicles in 2024.

That data also shows that the average number of reports of theft from vehicles was down in 2024. Last February, MNPD started Operation 72, an initiative that specifically tasks violent crime detectives from each precinct with investigating stolen cars and vehicle break-ins.

Metro Police credit the program with helping to curb some theft. 1000 individuals have been arrested through the operation, and over 500 vehicles were recovered.

Lower numbers alone, though, do not make things better for those who are victims of the car break-ins that are still occurring.

Residents say the continuing crime is “frustrating,” “unsettling,” and “disheartening.” Many say they continue to be on edge, despite taking additional measures to try and protect themselves against further theft.

Police have issued a reminder to residents to always make sure car doors are locked, never leave the keys in the vehicle, and keep valuable items out of sight. They have stated that they will increase patrol presence in the recently affected areas.
