Let’s hear it for the ‘don’t know’ voters

This request for participation in a survey comes from PeoplesPortalUK, not TCW.

THE Gorton and Denton by-election, in which the Greens and Reform came first and second, is further confirmation that the old days of Labour and Conservative domination are over. Reports from the ground suggest widespread dissatisfaction with politicians. This is exactly what I experienced when campaigning in the July 2024 general election. We are clearly in unknown territory here. Who would now dare predict the outcome of a general election? What polling numbers can the public and news media rely on?

When I wrote in TCW at the beginning of the by-election campaign, I outlined a number of flaws in the current election poll approach. Pollsters ask about an imaginary election to be held tomorrow and ask for a single choice. My reading is that the number of people who have decided who they want to vote for is increasingly small. There could well be more in the ‘none of the above segment’ (people who think all party political choices are unappealing). I’d like your help quantifying this.

At People’s Portal, a new venture helping people get involved in local and national decision making, we have developed a series of questions which address two basic issues:

  1. Most people aren’t expecting an election tomorrow and so haven’t decided who they’ll vote for;
  2. What’s more interesting is the range of possible outcomes and the extent to which party loyalty has evaporated.

Voters at the next general election, and at the May local elections, are likely to be presented with a wider range of choices of candidates than ever before. As such we are in an era of uncertainty – how uncertain will be quantified by our survey.

The survey also includes questions about the local elections. If you are interested in standing as an Independent candidate (or supporting Independent candidates) you can sign up for more info. If you are not interested you can skip these questions or just tell us what matters to you. Here’s a flavour of what people have said so far:

‘Too many of the elected representatives lack real world experience.’

‘Who are they representing, the people or the people pulling the strings above them?’

‘Party affiliations are stopping local issues from being expressed and considered.’

If we get enough TCW readers (probably 100) we’ll share the results here. If you do the survey you’ll be able to sign up to get the national results. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete. Please click on the link below.
