Letter of the day: Respect?

Dear Editor

I agree with Robert Worms (TCW yesterday) that political rage has passed the point of good sense, and that resorting to abuse on a regular basis will just drive decent people out of politics. I am with him when he says we should try to be polite when discussing politics.

But it’s very hard to stay well-behaved when you hear a politician obviously lying or dissembling, and it happens far too often. Surely Sean Walsh is right to say that you should call a liar out, even if it coarsens debate?

I believe we can find a compromise. When you see someone lying on the television, you may shout and swear at the screen as much as you like, although probably short of risking divorce. There are plenty of opportunities.

But down the pub or on the floor of the House of Commons, try to be polite. Labour MPs: that includes not calling your opponents ‘racists’.
