Dear Editor
Desperate to plug the vast black hole of debt created by this incompetent Labour Government during the short time it has been in office, the Chancellor, robbing Rachel Reeves, is looking at increased ways to pick the nation’s pockets, meaning even more in taxes. Many of us have worked all our lives paying tax and national insurance, often by continuing work past retirement age, as in my case. Like many others I am still paying tax on my small pension thanks to Gordon Brown, another tax raiding Labour Chancellor.
Many people do not realise the other ways we incur invisible taxes when going about our daily lives; due to this I decided to keep a record of all the taxes I paid during the month of September. The totals were: VAT on non-food purchases £135.48, income tax £70.80, alcohol duty (I like my real ale) £44.13, fuel duty £41.88 and council tax £222.00, a total of £514.29 to the state and my local council. Had I done this survey a month earlier it would have been higher due to renewing my Road Fund Licence, which was far from cheap due to motorists being treated as cash cows to be milked dry.
I don’t think I can afford to pay any more of my income to the state, especially after all the taxes I have paid in over half a century of continuous work, never claiming a penny in benefits.
