In our struggle for Net Zero, we are trying out all sorts of new energy systems for vehicles: hydrogen for cars, even ammonia for ships. There seems to be just one power source that has been quite forgotten – elastics.
We all remember as children winding up the rubber bands of toy airplanes and watching them fly across the school yard or the park. Or perhaps we played with model cars with elastic bands inside.
Materials science has made the most amazing progress over the last few decades, so the elastics available today can store vastly more energy than those of the past. What could be simpler than a family car powered by advanced elastic bands to take us to work or the children to school? In the evening just an hour’s pedalling on the re-winder would be enough to get it ready for the next day. Think of the health benefits of the exercise, not to mention the savings in gym membership fees.
As yet no other country has seen the benefits of using elastics to power vehicles. Just think, we could be first. What a great way to rebuild our once great car industry. Ed Miliband would be a hero.
All we need now is a catchy slogan to market these wonderful new eco-friendly vehicles, and what could be better than ‘Everyone loves a wind-up’?
