Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor,

If you believe that wind provides cheap reliable electricity, look away now. Electricity customers have paid £2billion compensation to (mostly foreign) wind-farm owners who have been ordered to switch off their turbines. These constraint payments are made when the grid cannot cope or when the electricity is not needed. So if the blades are turning at night when much less electricity is needed they get paid to switch off. It will only get worse, as turbine companies have yet more planning applications in the pipeline. Surely an intelligent government, which certainly the UK and Scottish governments are not, would have frozen all planning applications until the grid and infrastructure was capable of handling the additional output. Reliable wind electricity? If it had not been for gas generators, nuclear, biomass and the interconnectors supplying 63.6 per cent of our needs over the last year, the lights would have regularly gone out.
