Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

THE view of some eminent lawyers that the USA’s and Israel’s war against the Islamic Republic of Iran is unlawful relies on a fatal misapprehension of fact. These jurists imagine that there was peace between the parties which ended only a few days ago.

In actual fact, the Iranian regime has been at war with the USA and Israel ever since the 1979 revolution, which brought it to power. No Friday prayers led by the Ayatollah Khomenei or his successor Ali Khamanei were complete without chants of ‘Marg bar Amrika va Esraiil’ (death to America and Israel).

The regime has consistently prioritised the creation and funding of anti-Israeli and other extreme terrorist groups, such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis, over the welfare of the Iranian people.

It is widely believed that the notorious 1994 AMIA bombing which killed 85 people in Argentina was commissioned by the Iranian government to ensure that Jews could not feel safe anywhere on earth!

The regime has been willing to endure the heaviest economic sanctions, which impoverish the Iranian people, in order to develop nuclear weapons. Given that since the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1988 none of Iran’s neighbours have been a threat to it, one has to ask what the purpose of these weapons would be.

Unfortunately, the answer comes from the millenarian beliefs of the Iranian leadership. As 12-er Shi’as they believe that the purpose of the Islamic Republic is not the welfare of the Iranian people, but to hasten the return of the Hidden Imam through jihad and the destruction of Israel. You cannot reason with such fanatics, only fight them.
