Dear Editor
In the early days of my first business venture some 40 years ago I studied an American video course in negotiation. This has earned itself a high position in the list of best things I’ve ever done, constantly relevant over the years in evaluating human interactions, invariably viewable through the lens of negotiation.
As can world events of course. I’ve squirmed over the years watching British politicians making fools of themselves (and us) pretending to negotiate. President Trump’s actions fit into an expert negotiating pattern; maybe he wrote the manual.
He is certainly master of the most powerful negotiating position of all: to convince your opponents that you are insane. I’m serious – at a stroke you disarm their negotiating ploys, leaving only appeasement.
I guess that Trump mostly cares about American voters, so we should fairly hope Iran will be done and dusted before the midterms.
