Letter of the day: Why is the stock exchange so buoyant?

Dear Editor

I often look at the way that stock exchange indexes continue to go on up and up, but considering everything that is going wrong in this country I always come back to the how and why questions. Just what is driving them?

Potentially we could lose the ability to make steel with very limited markets available, while our other major industries are starved of reasonably priced energy. There are so many reasons why the markets should be down on us, and yet that is not happening.

Take a look at theFTSE All Share: Market overview – this graph is a ten-year view. See how it has grown in the last year alone. It is at it’s highest point ever!

How can this be? Where is the confidence coming from when we have been told to expect an economic crash, when our national debt is at impossible heights, and we are expecting a Budget that will increase that debt while so many of us will be robbed of the limited spending power we have, and our government is doing all the wrong things?

Is this simply a case of those in the know preparing for the big crash by taking their profits now?
