A recently released report ranks traffic congestion in Nashville as some of the worst in the world.
According to the INRIX 2024 Traffic Scorecard Report, Nashville has the 27th-worst traffic congestion globally. The top spot went to Istanbul, Turkey, followed by New York City at No. 2.
The report also lists Nashville as the 11th most congested city in the U.S. with drivers losing an average of 63 hours sitting in traffic at a cost of $1,128 per driver.
It notes that drivers in the city lost an average of 63 hours in traffic, with the cost of congestion per driver reaching $1,128.
Here are some key statistics from the report about Nashville’s traffic:
• Peak speed during the worst part of the morning and afternoon commute: 29 mph
• Off-peak speeds during quieter periods between the morning and afternoon commutes: 48 mph
• Last mile speeds into downtown Nashville during the morning commute: 19 mph
The report also noted the importance of city planning to make commuting manageable for residents.
“Cities are likely to experience continued growth in trips in 2025, barring economic, political, or social outcomes. Cities are likely to be handling many more commuters in new modes, on different days, and at different times than in years past. Utilizing the latest technology in traffic, safety, and incident planning can help Departments of Transportation to manage the road network to improve the quality of life in their city,” the report said.
