During a Joint Convention on Wednesday, Jan. 15th, 2025, the Tennessee General Assembly held an election for the state’s chief constitutional officer positions.
Tre Hargett Re-Elected as Tennessee’s Secretary of State
Rep. Greg Martin (R-Hixson-District 26) carried Tre Hargett’s nomination on the House floor and Sen. Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17) followed up with a second.
Sen. Charlane Oliver (D-Nashville-District 19) nominated CEO of The Equity Alliance, Tequila Johnson, and Rep. John Ray Clemmons (D-Nashville-District 55).
Hargett was re-elected as Tennessee’s Secretary of State for the next four years by a Senate vote of 27-6 and a House vote of 74-21.
He has served in the position since 2009.
“I don’t take the trust you’ve given me lightly,” Hargett addressed the General Assembly members. “There are days we disagree. There are different things that get said and done, but know I love each and every one of you. It’s a privilege to work with you and for you, and it’s an incredible honor for me to continue to be your Secretary of State.”
David H. Lillard, Jr. Re-Elected as Tennessee’s State Treasurer
Rep. Pat Marsh (R-Shelbyville-District 62) carried David Lillard, Jr.’s nomination on the House floor and Sen. John Stevens (R-Huntingdon-District 24) seconded it.
Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville-District 90) nominated Former Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Rep. John Ray Clemmons seconded that nomination.
Lillard was re-elected to serve as Tennessee’s State Treasurer for the next two years by a Senate vote of 27-6 and a House vote of 74-21.
He has held the position since 2009.
“It has been and continues to be the honor of my life to serve Tennesseans in this role,” Lillard said. “It is something that will always be remembered by me as an opportunity to work with each and every member of the General Assembly regardless of their party or their background, and each and every Tennessean for the betterment of our great state.”
Jason E. Mumpower Re-Elected as Comptroller of the Treasury
Rep. Jerome Moon (R-Maryville-District 8) carried Jason Mumpower’s nomination on the House floor and Sen. Dawn White (R-Murfreesboro-District 13) seconded it.
Freshman Rep. Gabby Salinas (D-Memphis-District 96) nominated her predecessor Former Rep. Dwayne Thompson (D-Cordova-District 96) and Rep. John Ray Clemmons offered up a second for his friend “Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Thompson.”
Mumpower was re-elected as Tennessee’s Comptroller of the Treasury for the next two years by a Senate vote of 27-6 and a House vote of 74-22.
He has served in the position since 2021.
“In the comptroller’s office our mission is to make government work better,” Mumpower remarked. “Let’s get to work. God bless the state of Tennessee.”
