A Shelbyville teacher has been arrested and charged with child sex crimes.

Shelbyville Police confirmed that Bryan Alan Whittinghill, a history teacher at Shelbyville Central High School, was arrested on January 15 after their Criminal Investigations Division received a complaint accusing him of sexual battery.
The complaint alleges that Whittinghill had inappropriate sexual contact with two of his adopted teenage daughters. An initial investigation showed that the abuse began in 2023 and continued until January 2026.
Whittinghill is charged with seven counts of sexual battery by an authority figure. Investigators say more charges could come as the investigation continues.

According to the Shelbyville Central High School website, Whittinghill has been in the classroom for three years.
Bedford County Schools released a statement saying that Whittinghill was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. He is prohibited from contacting students.
He is being held in the Bedford County Jail.
