In a special called meeting on Thursday, the Sullivan County Board of Education voted to appeal a judge’s recent ruling regarding the reinstatement of former teacher Matthew Hawn.

Hawn was a teacher at Sullivan Central High School in 2021 when he was fired after a parent complained about curriculum being used in the contemporary issue course he was teaching.

The complaint specifically focused on Hawn’s use of an article about white privilege and a spoken poem called “White Privilege” that also included profanity.

Last month, Hawn won an appeal in which Chancellor Katherine Priester reversed the school board’s decision to terminate him and ordered that he be paid his full salary for the time that he was suspended and dismissed.

At the time of that ruling, Sullivan County Board of Education Chairman Matt Price and Director of Schools Chuck Carter issued a statement detailing their plan to appeal that decision, pending a confirmation vote from the school board.

With that vote Thursday night, the case will now be heard by the Tennessee Court of Appeals.
