Suspected Drone Attack on Sanctioned Russian LNG Tanker Sparks Serious Concern – HotAir

Not because it is a big flaming ball of glowing gas afterward, which, sadly enough, is nothing really new when things are spicy in the Middle East, or in the Black Sea area when the Ukrainians have theirs flying straight and true.

No, it’s more WHERE this happened – in the central Mediterranean between Malta and the coast of Libya.

And, yes – that was a collective gulp you heard as the initial fireball went skyward.

Reports are still unconfirmed at the moment, and a Turkish maritime patrol plane is monitoring the vessel.

An LNG carrier identified as the Arctic Metagaz, part of Russia’s emerging shadow fleet transporting sanctioned liquefied natural gas, was reportedly on fire early Tuesday in the central Mediterranean off the coasts of Malta and Libya.

Footage circulating on the platform X appeared to show a large LNG carrier engulfed in flames following what several social media accounts described as explosions. The authenticity of the video could not immediately be verified. However, preliminary visual analysis suggests the imagery does not match previously documented LNG carrier fire incidents that have circulated online in recent years.

This could signal the start of something really, really bad if a drone strike there is confirmed, and if Ukrainian, it would be their second bold move out of the Black Sea into the open Mediterranean.

…It remains unclear whether the incident was the result of an accident, mechanical failure, or a deliberate attack by air or sea. There is also no confirmation at this stage whether the event is linked to escalating tensions involving Iran or represents a targeted Ukrainian operation.

The Arctic Metagaz is among roughly a dozen vessels used to transport sanctioned LNG from Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 facility to buyers at China’s Beihai Terminal. These vessels have drawn increased scrutiny amid Western sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports.

...The first confirmed Ukrainian attacks on a vessel in the Mediterranean occurred just over two months ago when the Qendil, an Omani-flagged “shadow fleet” tanker was struck between Crete and Malta.

It’s one helluva fire.

Not good at all.

The size of these open-ocean LNG tankers is just enormous, and the possible catastrophic consequences of a explosion are unimaginable. This will give you a good idea of the scale of the thing.

What if it had been in port? Perish the thought, although you can bet someone’s had it already.

This gives you some sense of the location in the Med where the vessel exploded.

According to what I’m reading, the Ukrainians had already been working on long-distance drones that could then be loaded on a mothership disguised as a cargo vessel. They’d hang them off the sides to launch them.

A lot of speculation at the moment is focused on whether this is a test run for one of those new-gen drones. There’s no denying the Ukrainians are the drone Zen masters.

And the stand-off capability they’re managing is impressive. Drones are a ton cheaper than a Tomahawk or the like.

…High Ranking Ukrainian Military mentioned in the past that they would have the ability to Launch Sea baby Naval Drones from Container ships by deploying drones off the side of the ship from transport containers.

This may be the method used to transport the drones.

Sea baby now boast a 1,500 kilometers but this is outside the 1,950 km distance. This could be another Spider Web Operation with a Cargo vessal acting as a mothership for the launch.

It used to be that asymmetric warfare was all about the jungle or popping up from behind a grave in a cemetery in Fallujah.

There’s no place they follow the old rules anymore.
