In an effort to provide parents with greater transparency about their children’s medical treatments and records, Senator Mark Pody (R-Dist. 17- Lebanon) has filed SB0025 which would ensure that a child’s parent, legal guardian, or custodian may, “access and review all health and medical records of the child,” including records related to treatments performed on minors without parental consent.

The bill would allow an employee of a local education agency to provide basic first aid treatment like bandages, gauze, or ice packs for the treatment of minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises, but makes clear that parents have the right to obtain any and all records for any medical treatments, prescriptions, or rehabilitations.

Parental rights in the medical field have become increasingly important in the state as the quest for ending “gender affirming” care for minors and procedures without parental knowledge or consent, including vaccinations, continue to be spotlight issues in Tennessee.
