The Tennessee Conservative [By Olivia Lupia] –
Just before the Feb. 6 filing deadline for this year’s legislative session, Senator Paul Rose (R- Lauderdale-District 32) and Representative Mark Cochran (R- Englewood- District 23) filed a simple bill which would recognize only two sexes in Tennessee.
SB0936/HB1271 is less than a half page long and declares, “It is the policy of this state that there are only two (2) sexes, a biological male and a biological female.”
This piece of legislation seems to be following in the steps of President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) restoring biological truth to the federal government, and the Tennessee bill’s language is even similar to portions of the EO, like the one which declares, “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.”
The EO further declares, “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality,” and defines “Sex” to “refer to an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female. ‘Sex’ is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of ‘gender identity’.”
According to MSN, this is not the first bill addressing adherence to biological sex in the state as Governor Lee signed SB1440 into law in 2023 which defined that “sex” “means a person’s immutable biological sex as determined by anatomy and genetics existing at the time of birth and evidence of a person’s biological sex.”
SB0936 has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee and assigned to the House Civil Justice Subcommittee, though neither committee has a set calendar date to hear the bills as of this writing.
