Tennessee Conservative News Staff –

A Tennessee mayor was arrested last week after being found in possession of crack cocaine.

65-year-old Jamie Mayo was arrested last Friday after police found 0.25 grams of crack cocaine under the passenger seat of the vehicle in which Mayo was sitting.

Mayo is the mayor of Gallaway, Tennessee, a small town in Fayette County with a population of just over 500 people.

According to law enforcement officials in Tipton County, deputies noticed a red Dodge Ram 1500 headed northbound on Hwy. 59 South around 10:59 pm with dark tinted windows and non-functioning lights.

As deputies informed Mayo of the reason for stopping his vehicle, he requested to be able to get out of the truck. Officials say Mayo was acting nervous but gave police permission to search the vehicle.

During the search, officers found a white crystal substance under the seat where Mayo had been sitting. After it tested positive for cocaine, Mayo was taken into custody.

He is charged with drug possession, manufacturing/delivering/selling a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. He was booked on a $10,000 bond which he was able to meet.

Mayo released a statement maintaining his innocence and said he has no intention of stepping down as Gallaway mayor at this time. He has retained a private attorney and is working to resolve the issue.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
