The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
Hamilton County Schools were designated as a “satisfactory” district by the Tennessee Department of Education in the release of its 2023-2024 state report card last week, despite nearly a third of the schools in the system receiving an individual letter grade score of ‘D’ or ‘F.’
To determine a school’s letter grade, the state considers academic achievement, academic growth, and growth in the lowest 25 percent of students, as well as college and career readiness for high schools.
Each indicator is weighted, with achievement making up the largest portion of the overall rating.
Out of the 80 Hamilton County Schools, 12 scored an ‘A,’ with 6 elementary schools and 6 middle/high schools on the list. Of those high schools receiving the highest marks, all were magnet schools or collegiate prep schools.
Coming in towards the bottom of the list are 24 schools that received a ‘D’ rating and 6 schools that received an ‘F.’ All of the failing scores were earned by elementary and middle schools.
Eight area high schools did receive a ‘D.’ While several of those schools received that same score last year, several actually fell from a higher rank. Central High School and The Howard School both dropped from last year’s ‘C,’ while Chattanooga Preparatory School and Red Bank High both went from a ‘B’ to a ‘D.’
Despite the high number of subpar scores received, the TN DOE considered Hamilton County Schools to be “satisfactory.” Systems designated in this category received an overall score of greater than 1.1 but less than 2.1 on a 5-point scale.
