To paraphrase a better-known thought, has Europe has become a faraway country of which we know little?
Is it a case of give in now, get what you can get from it, despite it absolutely not being the best outcome, but then use the time bought to re-arm and re-focus because if we fight on or try to hold the line as we are right now we will lose? Hand over fist lose. And yes, Europe at present (including Britain) is a basket case regarding their defence. At present they will not commit arms, or real monies or God forbid place actual troops on the ground in harm’s way.
Seriously do you really see the British or the French committing troops to a shooting war?
They choose instead to stand on their political doorsteps in front of friendly cameras making pious, priggish fatuous statements for a supine press that cannot see the chasm. And Trump is waking them up to their delusions and weakness. Thankfully for all the squealing about Vance at Munich, or Trump and Zelensky in the White House, Europe might finally be paying attention.
Many people got Chamberlain wrong. Chamberlain knew perfectly well that should Britain and the wider West have engaged in a War with Hitler in that summer of 1938 over the matter of Czechoslovakia they would have lost. Bigly if you like. It was not appeasement – it was buying time. Time to recruit and time to train their armies and airmen, time to build the tanks, modern ships, and the aircraft, time that was not wasted. Time to spend more money more wisely on physical defense than bureaucracies. Certainly, Chamberlain was ruined politically, but in those months he bought, he saved the West.
Are we here again? And could, against all sense, it be that Trump is a Chamberlain for our days?
Maybe. But only if Europe listens and takes action. Are you a betting man?
