University School of Nashville Head of School Amani Reed has been dismissed following an extensive review of his response to sexual misconduct allegations against a now-terminated teacher.

Last year, a complaint was made by a student alleging that Dean Masullo, who had been teaching at USN since 2009, had made continuous unwanted sexual advances towards the girl, including holding her hand and pulling her to him while kissing her cheek.

On July 19, the school terminated Masullo, while also entering into a separation agreement with him. That agreement allotted Masullo $28, 433, approximately three months of pay, and also stipulated that he would be required to cooperate “with regard to any past, present, or future legal or regulatory matters.”

The school’s response, as well as their lack of communication with the student and her family, led to months of protest from students, parents, and faculty members, with many calling for the dismissal of Reed and Assistant Head of School Quinton Walker, as well as Board of Trustees President Eric Kopstain.

An independent review of the administration’s response was conducted by Nashville law firm Barnes and Thornburg LLP.

A statement released Tuesday by the board of trustees noted that “ultimately, the Board determined that Director Reed’s actions and inactions created significant harm, which led the Board to the decision that he is unable to lead USN.”

Currently, no criminal charges have been filed against Masullo.

The lawsuit brought by USN is still pending in Davidson County Chancery Court.
