A pro-Second Amendment bill seeking to remedy a confusing and controversial provision in Tennessee’s firearm carry laws is no longer viable for the legislative session after its Senate counterpart was deferred until 2027.

Attempting to bring clarity in the understanding and application of the law, HB2064 by Rep. Chris Todd (R-Madison County-District 73) would have deleted the “intent to go armed” clause in Tennessee firearms laws and allowed for weapons to be carried in other currently prohibited places like state parks.

While the bill made decent progress in the House, no further action could be taken on the bill by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as the Senate companion bill, SB2467 carried by Sen. Paul Bailey, was unceremoniously deferred by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Todd Gardenhire to 2027.

This deferment essentially killed the legislation as this is the second year of the two-year 114th General Assembly and bills cannot carry over to next year.

It is likely that the bill sponsors will attempt to revive the legislation again next session, but they will have to begin the committee process all over again with a brand-new General Assembly.
