Exclusive: Liz Truss on the woke establishment that sabotaged her, Part 1

A FORMER Prime Minister warns that Britain is in a managed decline and that the country is run by fat cats uninterested in our welfare. She also says that the UK’s elected leaders are essentially puppets with no power to make real change and that the Blair government introduced laws that are still damaging our democracy.

In 2022, Liz Truss became Conservative PM and came up against an impenetrable wall of civil servants and bureaucrats determined to scupper her policies. She describes them as a socialist ‘blob’, paralysed by woke and ‘groupthink’.

She says: ‘Ideologically, the entire British state has a left-wing view of economics. We have seen progressive socialist ideology take over our institutions. They’re in universities, in the Treasury and in the Bank of England and it’s been a disaster for the country.

‘People need to understand that this is a deliberate strategy and that the Treasury and the Bank of England are not just misguided, they’re acting in their own interests, and they’re making it pretty clear they’re ideologically of the left.

‘It’s very important that people understand that. Simply getting a different prime minister in Number 10 is not going to change anything. Nothing will change under Andy Burnham, and nothing will change if a new prime minister is elected in 2029, if they don’t reverse all the Blair laws and they don’t put new people in.

‘If they leave all those laws in place like the Equality Act, the Climate Change Act and the Bank of England Act, you will get the same policies run by the same people.

‘We’ve been through an era in Britain for the last 40 years of increased printing of money through quantitative easing, increased public spending, increased state control started by Blair in 1997.

‘It was continued under the Conservative government with the establishment of the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR).

‘These people believe in Keynesian economics. Andrew Bailey [governor of the Bank of England] has advocated for Net Zero, he’s advocated for DEI, and against Brexit.

‘It is the establishment view in Britain that we need to be part of the European Union, prop up our economy through mass migration, and that growth is generated by public sector investment, not by the private sector.’

Many Britons feel that life is ‘off’, and that government hates us, treating us like parasites that need controlling. Truss said: ‘They are the parasites – the public sector – they’re seeing their power increase. They’re not being held accountable. You’ve got people who are being well paid, who are in powerful positions.

‘Wealth owners have benefited. Quantitative easing has made it much harder for young people to get on the housing ladder but people who already own assets have benefited significantly.’ She gives as an example green industry magnate Dale Vince, founder of the renewable energy supplier Ecotricity, whose net worth is around £110million.

Truss says we are poorer than the people of Mississippi, one of America’s most impoverished states where 1 in 4 children live below the breadline. However, Mississippi has a higher GDP per capita than us, as does the US as a whole.

She said: ‘If you look at our economy versus the US economy, in the year 2000 we were pretty much catching up in terms of our GDP per capita. Now the Americans are 50 per cent ahead of us.’

The Telegraph reported last week that the average Briton’s wealth has fallen by more than a fifth over the last five years, according to the Swiss bank UBS which surveyed 37 countries.

So, who are the anonymous faces behind this economic disaster that we often refer to as ‘they’? Truss blames ‘the blob’, her label for senior civil service personnel, Andrew Bailey, the BBC, senior ranks in the media, mainstream media including the Times and Financial Times, senior corporates and parts of the City of London. They are mired in ‘groupthink’, she says, rather than deliberately malicious, although if not malicious, they would surely reverse damaging policies?

She despises woke. ‘Corporates have bought into Pride month and the rainbow flag so you can see that it’s become a dominant ideology,’ she said. ‘As well as benefiting financially, these people have benefited psychologically because they believe themselves to be virtuous. So, by having untrammelled immigration they believe they’re being kind to migrants. By having Net Zero they believe they’re being kind to the environment.’

Environmental reality is that China is building coal-fired power stations to produce solar panels that have a maximum life of 25 years, leach chemicals into the soil if damaged and are only semi-recyclable. What cannot be recycled goes into landfill. Meanwhile, on the altar of Net Zero, Britain is importing oil and gas from Europe and the Middle East instead of utilising our own.

Some might argue that we should not listen to Truss, who lasted just 49 days as Prime Minister after a move by Andrew Bailey allegedly destroyed her plan to cut taxes and boost the economy.

The day before she and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng were due to cancel the rise in corporation tax, the 45p in the pound high-earners income tax, as well as other tax reductions in her September 2022 mini-Budget, Bailey announced the release of £40billion of gilts on the market in a quantitative tightening move.

The pound fell, mortgage rates jumped and pension funds faced liquidity stress. Truss was blamed for creating the fragile market conditions, rather than Bailey, and was forced to resign. In a report reviewing the debacle, the Bank of England acknowledged that the system was more fragile that it had previously understood but has never apologised to Truss.

She said: ‘Before I got into the job, I didn’t understand the extent to which these people would deliberately sabotage and undermine me. Without that knowledge, I didn’t have the time or wherewithal to put together a mass movement to back up what I was doing.

‘Most of my predecessors did nothing and allowed the country to carry on in its managed decline. To beat the blob, we are going to have to create a counter-blob. There’s nothing I could humanly have done to resist those forces on my own. This needs to be a much bigger movement.’

She is fighting back as elected chairman of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), whose inaugural UK gathering takes place at the O2 in London from Thursday July 16 to Saturday July 18 (tickets still available).

Founded in 1974 in the US and now a flagship event, it is influential in bringing together conservative politicians, activists, journalists, and advocacy groups.

CPAC raised the profile of political figures such as Donald Trump, Ronald Reagan and Mitt Romney by giving them a platform. It also serves as a forum where conservative leaders and activists discuss policy, campaign strategy, and the direction of conservative politics.

Truss is a proud, unapologetic patriot who admires Trump, the president of Argentina Javier Milei and former president of Hungary Viktor Orbán. As an agitator, she says: ‘I will do whatever it takes to get our country on the right track. I still think not enough of the British public understand how bad things are. People don’t really understand how badly our country is in debt (£3trillion!) and what a shocking position all our public services are in, so we need to go out and communicate that.’

CPAC speakers include Reform leader Nigel Farage, shadow business secretary Andrew Griffiths and former Brexit minister Jacob Rees-Mogg from the Conservatives, and free speech campaigner Lucy Connolly, who was sentenced to 31 months in prison for speaking out online.

Truss says: ‘This isn’t just a British problem. In Ireland it’s a problem and across Europe. It’s a problem in America. The left is unfortunately on the march, and we have to fight it.’
