Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Former Nato chief Lord Robertson says that the UK government should consider reintroducing national service to protect Britain ‘due to the threats we now face’. He is correct: there are today only 181,890 personnel in the UK armed forces. All three branches are below their target size, with the overall force being about 6 per cent below strength, all experiencing a net loss of personnel.

There is an obvious solution. There are 975,000 young people (aged 16 to 24) not in education, employment, or training (NEETs) in the UK, with the majority receiving welfare benefits. They should join the armed forces and thus help deter those countries who would do us and the free world harm. Those passing pass medical, fitness, and security checks but not prepared to enlist should have their welfare benefits taken away.
