Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Protest in the UK has been an inherent and very long term right and a major part of freedom of speech. A right the citizens of this country have valued and used around subjects about which they care.

Now Labour are implying that a few protests are sufficient to get the message across and they are considering limiting them and upping the policing of them.

In the 1940s when I was born it was wartime and every Saturday my Dad would go to London to Hyde Park and set up a small stall and preach PEACE. Sure he got heckled and argued with: that was par for the course. But even those who disagreed with his message fought for his right to say what he wanted. Even the Government allowed him and others to say their bit, including the likes of Oswald Mosley.

Why have things changed? Why are our freedoms and rights being eroded? Is it merely because the MPs are super-sensitive and feel offended by some of what is said? Or is it possibly that they are scared because what is being said is the truth ? It’s your right (at the moment) to disagree with me about that. For how much longer I cannot say and nor can I say how far this repression will go.

My view is that it’s part of a far bigger picture. It’s a story where the freedoms and rights that I grew up with and valued will be no more. We are moving into a much more controlled and restrictive society where to say what you think or feel may well be illegal. Classed as a ‘hate crime’ or hurty. Society is to be segmented into the haves and the have nots, and the latter will be 90 per cent of the people.

Is this truly what British values are about? Or are we being conned and scammed big time?
