Dear Editor
Am I the only one that finds explicit adverts on women’s sanitary products demeaning and guilty of taking away what little dignity remains for women today? Take a look at this one.
Do we really need to see a woman putting an incontinence pad in her pants? Would they show a man putting one in his pants? They haven’t so far. Do we really need to see this at all?
A simple advert showing the product is enough. Or is it a general way of blanking anything that is woman by taking away the mystique and bringing women down to the level of just a body? With all the rapes and attacks on women, it’s clear to me that we are now increasingly regarded as just a body – without feelings and without a say on how we would like to be depicted. We are just a commodity to be used and dismissed when not required. And, to some extent, we have allowed that to happen.
Too much emphasis has been placed on aesthetics of beauty and body form which we have competed for, against each other. If we are to take back our sovereignty, we need to show and demonstrate respect for ourselves in all areas of life, especially in relation to men.
Can a transsexual man really know what it’s like to be a woman, all the nuances we instinctively develop and imbibe into our very souls? This is uniquely what defines us as women.
No one can take that away from us!
